A search for belonging across two countries

Lily Kim Qian’s graphic memoir traces a family’s repeated moves between towns in Canada and Shanghai, and the uncertainty those changes bring to the question of home. The account also turns toward family relationships: Lily’s father takes on primary caregiving, while her mother’s long absences and later return unsettle family life. As Lily reaches college, her effort to understand her parents becomes entwined with questions of identity and inherited trauma. The cross-border setting and memoir form frame a personal inquiry into how family history shapes a sense of belonging.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

Book overview

"Visually stunning." --Kirkus, starred review

In this debut graphic memoir, a young woman searches for belonging as her immigrant family moves between Canada and China.

Lily isn't sure where home is anymore. Her family is constantly on the move, resettling in different towns across Canada and, eventually, in Shanghai, China. Her father plays the role of primary caregiver while her mother is absent for long periods of time. When she reappears, her strange behavior turns Lily's life upside down. As Lily enters her college years, she strives to better understand her family and her place in the world. But can she escape the inherited trauma passed down by her immigrant parents?
