A divided fellowship, a continuing quest

The second volume of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings carries the Ring’s destruction quest into a new phase after the company is scattered. Frodo and Sam travel down the River Anduin with an unseen pursuer nearby, while the wider conflict over the Ring remains in view. The description also frames the book around the consequences of the Ring’s power and the dangers facing those who seek to prevent it from reaching the Dark Lord. This paperback edition is presented as a 25th-anniversary movie tie-in, with a cover image from Peter Jackson’s film trilogy.

Book overview

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Peter Jackson's award-winning film trilogy, the second part of Tolkien's epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, is reissued with an exclusive cover image from the film.

Frodo and the Companions of the Ring have been beset by danger during their quest to prevent the Puling Ring from falling into the hands of the Dark Lord by destroying it in the Cracks of Doom. They have lost the wizard, Gandalf, in the battle with an evil spirit in the Mines of Moria; and at the Falls of Rauros, Boromir, seduced by the power of the Ring, tried to seize it by force. While Frodo and Sam made their escape the rest of the company were attacked by Orcs.

Now they continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go.
