A different kind of knowing

Enid’s talents range from drawing horses and talking to animals to making porridge, while everyday tasks—like keeping track of keys or a school form—prove harder. That contrast gives the story a way to explore the pressure of “have tos” and “mustn’ts,” and what can be missed when they take up all the attention. The publisher frames Enid’s experiences around ADHD, neurodiversity and self-acceptance, with an emphasis on recognizing strengths and staying open to the magic in an unconventional view of the world.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Young readers, especially girls with ADHD, seeking a story that recognizes both challenges and strengths.
  • Adults who want to share a children’s story about neurodiversity and self-acceptance.
  • Readers interested in magical realism and a child’s distinctive way of seeing the world.

Book overview

Enid can tell you lots of things.

She can tell you how to draw horses, talk to animals and cook up the best porridge you'll ever taste.

But she can't tell you where she put your keys, or the whereabouts of that silly form her teacher said she absolutely mustn't lose.

Enid's story is about trying really, really hard to do the things we simply have to do.

But it's also about remembering that putting all your efforts into the 'have tos' and the 'musn'ts' makes the world a lot less colourful.

Katherine Richardson is a thirty-something mum of one who was diagnosed with ADHD shortly after having her son.

Her diagnosis came as both a huge surprise and also a massive 'OH' moment when she realised maybe losing everything in sight and talking faster than the speed of light weren't things she could help after all.

She hopes that Enid's story is a reminder to everyone, but especially to young (and not so young) girls with ADHD, that the things we know far outweigh the things we don't, and to never stop looking for magic.

Perfect for young readers, and the grown-ups who love them, The Things Enid Can Tell You celebrates neurodiversity, self-acceptance, and the magic of seeing the world a little differently.
