A mother’s account of pediatric cancer treatment

Abigail Walker’s account centers on her daughter’s cancer treatment and the demands it placed on family life. The chapters bring together a mother’s personal experiences and emotions with practical advice and medical information, making the book both a personal narrative and an informational resource. Its framing draws on the themes named in the title—suffering, endurance, character, and hope—and the description explicitly places the account within a Christian perspective.

Book overview

NOBODY EXPECTS IT
Getting the news that your child has cancer is never anticipated. In a sudden twist of reality, the world is upside down and you are shaken at the deepest level. Only a select few truly understand this horrifying alternate universe you've entered, and you are left confused and alone. But instead of being allowed to fall to pieces, you do what you must (what moms always do): you "mom-up" and take care of your child.
The pages of this little book detail the raw emotions and experiences of a mother who has been through the often-agonizing roller coaster of her daughter's treatment. Spoiler alert: it's not all bad. You will find practical advice and medical information scattered throughout to make this a read of the head as well as of the heart. Nobody starts this journey knowing everything, but maybe these chapters can give you a leg up. And remember, you are not alone.
"Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope." -Romans 5:3-4
