Essays on ancient earthworks, art, and the endurance of beauty

Bruce Rice links Ohio’s two-thousand-year-old Hopewell Earthworks—described here as the world’s largest geometric earthworks—to present-day landscapes and human histories. The collection brings together a daybook centered on these monumental sites with other essays concerning art’s life-preserving role and the social history of people who have lost the power of speech. Across its varied subjects, the book frames beauty as something persistent: embedded in place, carried through acts of making, and capable of outlasting individual lives.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in the Hopewell Earthworks and Ohio landscapes
  • Essay readers drawn to connections among art, history, and place
  • Those interested in writing about speech, silence, and social history

Book overview

Standstill takes us on a journey through Ohio's two-thousand-year-old Hopewell Earthworks, which include the largest geometric earthworks in the world. But these are also the landscapes of a writer who lives in the present. Rice's evocative stories show us art that has saved lives--sometimes hundreds of lives--and a social history of those who literally have lost their power of speech. These are scenes that affirm the best that is in us and the persistence of beauty, which he says is stronger than we think and outlives us all.
