AlbakiReads Editorial

A summer camp rivalry on the soccer field

Soccer camp is an unwelcome substitute for vacation in this young adult sports story, especially when the narrator is separated from friends and roomed with Zander, the player who beat their team the year before. Professional training and a chance to compete together in a three-on-three tournament for the Golden Boot Trophy give the pair a shared goal. But the narrator’s plans begin to unravel, putting the camp experience and the new partnership under pressure. The setup brings team competition, an uneasy alliance, and summer disappointment into the same soccer-centered story.

Book overview

Summer is turning into a total washout.

Instead of going on vacation, I get dumped at soccer camp while my family takes my sister to her doctor. My friends are in a different age group, and worse, I'm assigned to room with Zander, the monster who beat us last year. Things start looking up when we get some pro soccer training, and Zander agrees to play with me in the 3v3 tournament to win the Golden Boot Trophy. Yes! But then? Mamma Mia! Everything starts glitching. I'm talking Disaster with a capital D.

What should I do? Got any advice?
