AlbakiReads Editorial

A personal songbook shaped by a long-delayed musical project

Built around lyrics Jonathan K. Hale began writing while serving in the Army, right as rain documents a creative ambition carried over decades. The book’s publication is framed by the author’s account of surviving a stroke, an experience that sharpened his resolve to finally bring the songs forward. With separate versions available for people who want to perform the material themselves, it stands as a compact collection connected to songwriting, personal history, and the decision to act on unfinished work.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Guitarists and singers seeking material to play themselves
  • Songbook collectors interested in independently published songs
  • Readers interested in personal creative projects shaped over time

Book overview

For most of my life I always thought it would be really cool to make an album. I wrote lyrics for over 30 songs when I was in the Army and copyrighted the best 10 or 12 with the Library of Congress in 1992, but never really did anything with them (even though my dad used to ask me towards the end of his days: "When are we going to do something with our songs?") After almost dying myself from a stroke (basically a sports injury) last year, I realized that I don't have all the time in the world to do this.. *There are two different versions for those who would like to play and sing these songs themselves.
