Book overview
A beautifully illustrated heirloom collection of Russian bedtime lullabies and folk nursery rhymes (колыбельные и поте́шки) for babies and children ages 0-5 - a calming keepsake gift book for toddlers, newborns, and heritage-language families who want to end the day in Russian.
"Ходит сон у окон, бродит дрёма возле дома..."
There is a moment at the end of every day when the house goes quiet - when the toys are put away, the windows darken, and a child's breath slows against your shoulder. This book was made for that moment. Read one verse or read all of them; let the soft, repeating cadence of these old songs become the signal your child comes to expect, the last voice they hear before sleep. The rhythms are short. The language is ancient - these are not rhymes written for a modern book, they are rhymes that entered books from centuries of evenings in firelit rooms.
If you are raising a child in Russian outside of Russia - in Toronto, Brooklyn, Berlin, Tel Aviv, or London - this book was written for your family.
This is a quiet, beautifully made evening ritual in book form. Traditional Russian lullabies and народные потешки drawn from 19th- and early-20th-century folk records, set against soft, moonlit, Palekh-inspired illustrations on 80 full-colour landscape pages. Read one verse at bedtime, or let the whole book become a slow, gentle wind-down from the world.
