Stories that introduce young readers to Hawaiian medicinal plants

Through poetic tales told by the herbs of Hawaiʻi, this illustrated book connects plant knowledge with friendship and care for the natural world. Its subject is Laʻau Lapaʻau, or Hawaiian herbal medicine, presented for young readers through stories about local medicinal plants and their place in people’s lives. The format includes detailed illustrations and printable coloring sheets, with stories intended to be read aloud or listened to. Together, these elements make the book an introduction to Hawaiian plant traditions and a prompt for noticing and respecting the plants around us; it does not need to be treated as practical medical guidance.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Children ages 9–12 interested in plants and nature
  • Families or educators seeking read-aloud material about Hawaiian plant traditions
  • Young readers who enjoy illustrated stories and coloring activities

Book overview

"Plant Medicine Stories, Super Noni and Friends is a link for our keiki to cultivate a deeper connection to the earth through learning about Hawaiian plant medicine."

Whether you're a beginner to La'au Lapa'au (Hawaiian Herbal Medicine) or someone with more experience, these tales told from the heart of the La'au (Herbs) of Hawai'i will be sure to provide 3 things.

  • An education around plants and their importance in our lives
  • A friendship and respect for the La'au under your feet
  • A fun time getting to know the personalities of local medicinal plants

I believe that if these younger generations see plants, especially local medicinal plants as friends, they'll be more apt to take care of them and their environment now and in the future.

*Includes poetic stories you can read aloud to your Keiki (Child) OR listen to, detailed illustrations and printable coloring sheets.
