A parent-focused account of neurological strain and delayed diagnosis

Kimberly Idoko frames childhood neurological symptoms through the idea of accumulating neurological load, arguing that changes can emerge before a diagnosis is made. The book connects that account to its critique of food, pharmaceutical, medical, government, and media systems, which it presents as contributing to pressure on children or obscuring its causes. Idoko also emphasizes parents’ observations of patterns and changes as information that can matter while families seek answers. The description positions the book at the intersection of child neurology, diagnosis, and advocacy, with a focus on how families encounter institutions when a child’s development or functioning changes.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Parents concerned about changes in a child’s neurological functioning or development
  • General readers interested in childhood neurology and diagnostic delays
  • Readers interested in medical systems and family advocacy

Book overview

"Idoko offers a path forward for parents who fear the toll that modern childhood takes." - Kirkus

"Unreservedly recommended." "Especially noteworthy for its reader-friendly organization and presentation for the non-specialist general reader." - Midwest Book Review

Your child didn't change overnight.

The systems didn't fail all at once.

Before diagnosis, a child's developing brain is forced to expend more energy to achieve the same function. As that burden grows, subtle changes appear: a loss of rhythm, a narrowing tolerance, early signs of a nervous system under pressure.

In The Miswired Child, Dr. Kimberly Idoko exposes what unfolds beneath symptoms that are routinely misread. She traces how neurological load accumulates inside the developing brain, then shows how modern systems compound it: Big Food that destabilizes physiology. Big Pharma that suppresses signals without asking why. Big Medicine that waits for collapse. Big Government that enforces delay. Big Media that profits from confusion.

Clear-eyed and unsentimental, The Miswired Child reveals why delay is never neutral, and why a parent's noticing of pattern and loss may be the only data that arrives in time.

Dr. Kimberly Idoko is a board-certified neurologist, children's rights attorney, entrepreneur, and author whose work spans medicine, law, and advocacy in ways few practitioners can claim. Her professional mission is rooted in a deeply personal origin: surviving an accidental shooting at age four, an experience that shaped her lifelong commitment to patient-centered care and the belief that families deserve to be seen, heard, and supported by every system they encounter.

Dr. Idoko brings nearly two decades of clinical experience to her practice, treating a broad spectrum of neurological conditions. She earned a B.S. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology with a Neurobiology focus from Yale University, a Medical Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine, a Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School, and a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Business School. She lives in Los Angeles with her family.
