AlbakiReads Editorial

A family story across two military eras

L. A. Huffman’s novel links the First World War to the events leading into the Second through Dominic Meringleo and his son, Albertino. Dominic’s wartime service alongside George S. Patton Jr. is followed by his participation in the 1932 Bonus Army march, where the family encounters Patton and Douglas MacArthur again. After Dominic’s death, Albertino enters the Army and is sent to Manila in 1941, bringing the story into another period of military history. The book’s historical frame is shaped by the passage of experience from father to son, with veterans’ lives and prominent military figures connecting its episodes.

  • Readers interested in historical fiction centered on military service and veterans.
  • Readers curious about the Bonus Army march and military history spanning the First and Second World Wars.

Book overview

Dominic Meringleo is a fictional character who survives the final battles of the First World War at the side of George S. Patton Jr. After the war, he marries and fathers a son, whom he names Albertino. Dominic takes Albertino with him to Washington DC for the 1932 Bonus Army march, where they again encounter Patton and Douglas MacArthur. After Dominic dies, his son enlists in the Army and is sent to Manila in 1941, where he comes face-to-face with Douglas MacArthur.
