A historical account of the Fox Terrier

First published in 1889, Rawdon Lee’s book documents the Fox Terrier through its early history, shows, notable dogs and kennels, with attention to regional strains in Yorkshire and Devonshire. Its scope also reaches into practical and contentious aspects of the breed’s past, including training, breeding, the scale of points and practices in the show ring. The volume includes the wire-haired variety and reproduces Arthur Wardle’s illustrations from the original edition. As a period work, it offers a historical record of breed knowledge and debate rather than a guide to assume reflects present-day standards.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in the history and development of dog breeds.
  • Fox Terrier enthusiasts curious about early shows, kennels and regional strains.
  • Those exploring historical writing on dog breeding, training and showing.

Book overview

The kennel editor of The Field on the breed that ruled the late-Victorian bench - including the Rev. John Russell's own terriers.

Rawdon Briggs Lee (1845-1908) succeeded Stonehenge at The Field and became the most authoritative recorder of the British dog of his generation. A History and Description, With Reminiscences, of the Fox Terrier, first published in 1889, covers the old writers on terriers, the origins and the early shows, the famous dogs and the great kennels, the Yorkshire and Devonshire strains, ear-cropping and the other malpractices of the ring, the scale of points, working and training, the wire-haired variety, and breeding and rearing.

Arthur Wardle's illustrations are reproduced from the original edition - and Wardle is collected today in his own right.

This edition features:

  • The classic 1889 history of the breed, by the kennel editor of The Field
  • The Rev. John Russell's terriers, and the Yorkshire and Devonshire strains
  • Early shows, famous dogs, the scale of points, and the malpractices of the ring
  • Illustrated by Arthur Wardle, reproduced from the original edition
