A snapshot of British fiction at a turning point
Edited by Bill Buford, Granta 3 gathers fiction and criticism around a central literary question: whether the English novel had become predictable, and what might follow from that perceived impasse. The collection treats “the English novel” as a category under pressure, pairing arguments about its limits with work that signals new possibilities for British fiction. As a literary collection, it offers a period-specific conversation about artistic renewal, criticism, and the changing terms used to discuss fiction.
Based on publisher information and book metadata.
Is it the end of the English novel? Has it grown predictable and unadventurous? Granta 3 collects work from writers and critics which points to the fact that our terms have grown inadequate: it is the end of the English novel; but it is also the beginning - quite possibly an extremely important beginning - of British fiction.
