German-speaking lives in Waterloo Region

Built from biographical interviews with German-speaking immigrants and their descendants, this oral-history collection places personal recollections alongside the history of Waterloo Region, Ontario. Its chapters trace experiences before migration, arrival and settlement, work, language, family life, and the preservation of social and cultural heritage. The contents also distinguish migration backgrounds, including communities from south-eastern and east-central Europe, Germany, and Austria, and include sections on Mennonites and connections with the “old country.” Together, the book organizes individual life stories around the varied ways migration shaped community life from 1938 to 2011.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers interested in oral histories and German-Canadian community experiences.
  • Readers studying migration, settlement, or local history in Waterloo Region and Ontario.
  • Readers interested in language, family, work, and cultural heritage across generations.

Book overview

The scope of this Oral History Project is to collect the life stories of German-speaking immigrants to Canada by conducting biographic interviews with members of the German-Canadian community (immigrants from German-speaking central Europe as well as their descendants) who have ties to Waterloo Region of south-western Ontario, Canada. The interviews were video-recorded, transcribed, and the information gathered presented in two distinct ways. The initial presentation is a book which would contain individual community members' recollections of their immigration and settlement experiences. These accounts are embedded within the larger, historical context. The book chapters focus on a variety of migration-related topics, such as life before immigration to Canada, the immigration experience, life after arrival in Canada, work experience, language, and maintaining social and cultural heritage.
