Ambition and the rise of the Steel Pier

Set in Atlantic City during the resort town’s golden age, the novel traces Frank Abbott’s ascent from displaced river boy and hotel worker to owner of the Steel Pier. The pier’s growth into a major entertainment destination places personal ambition alongside the spectacle of the Boardwalk, while rivalry, strain in Frank’s marriage, war, and a devastating hurricane bring his success into question. The description frames the story around reinvention, loyalty, and the uncertain promise of the American Dream, with the Steel Pier serving as both a business venture and a symbol of the world Frank once hoped to enter.

Book overview

Forgotten Palayground

Set during the golden age of Atlantic City, Forgotten Playground follows Frank Abbott, a poor river boy forced from his home when railroads replace boats. In the glittering resort town, of Atlantic City he glimpses the magnificent Steel Pier and vows to one day belong to that world. Through relentless work, he climbs from hotel laborer to automobile dealer to wealthy businessman - eventually buying the Steel Pier itself. Alongside his childhood friend Jack, and George Anmar, a bold immigrant showman inspired by the era of Buffalo Bill Cody, Frank builds the pier into America's premier entertainment destination.

But rivalry turns bitter. His marriage strains under ambition. War darkens the Boardwalk. And when a hurricane devastates the pier, Frank must decide whether holding power matters more than holding on to the people he loves.

It's a story about reinvention, spectacle, loyalty, and the fragile illusion of the American Dream.
