A focused study of cocoyam storage and post-harvest fungal rot

Centered on cocoyam’s post-harvest challenges in Cameroon, this concise research study examines how traders store the crop and how fungal pathogens are associated with rot under different storage conditions. It maps the storage methods investigated, identifies fungi found at the farm gate and after storage, and presents pathogen-incidence findings across those methods. The book also offers a recommendation on storage practice while leaving open a further practical question: which organic substances might help limit fungal incidence or spread during storage. Its subject matter connects crop preservation with the role of cocoyam in food supply and livelihoods in tropical regions.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Agriculture and post-harvest management students
  • Researchers interested in cocoyam diseases and storage
  • Growers and traders seeking research on cocoyam preservation

Book overview

Despite the importance of cocoyam, little research attention has been given to it especially at post-harvest, thus considered neglected and underutilized. It provides food and is an income-generating crop for about 200 million people in the tropics. In Cameroon, it is the third most cultivated food after cassava and plantain thus, the importance of cocoyam to regional food security cannot be overstated. In this book, the researcher first of all identifies the different storage methods that traders store their cocoyam, then isolates the fungal pathogens responsible for cocoyam rot at farm gate and then identifies the fungal pathogens that infest the cocoyam after subjecting them to various storage methods. Inside, you'll find the incidence of the various fungal pathogens for different storage methods and the best storage method recommendation. The question remains: what organic substances can be used to prevent the incidence and/or spread of these pathogens at storage?
