From Atlanta to the Army and the Pulpit

Javante Brown’s path begins in Atlanta, where his parents’ drug addiction shapes his early sense of possibility. The novel then traces a dramatic change of direction: military service, time in a war zone, and a move into preaching despite his own uncertainty about that calling. Framed by Matthew 16:26, the book places spiritual stakes alongside questions of ambition, material gain, and what a person may sacrifice in pursuit of worldly security. Its premise joins a personal struggle for purpose with Christian imagery of temptation and the soul.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

Book overview

Growing up in Atlanta, Ga, Javante Brown, had a shrewd outlook on his life. Both of his parents were hooked on drugs and there seemed to be no way out or at least he thought there wasn't. He never envisioned himself joining the Army and going from the war zone straight into the pulpit. Although preaching wasn't his ideal job, he knew that there must be a calling on his life. That is until he came face to face with the devil himself. They say it's hard for a rich man to enter into the gates of heaven but who needs heaven when you have everything you need, right here on earth.

For what is a man profited, if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?(Matthew 16:26).
