A past that reframes the holy war

Allen’s account of his time with Mana gives Kanda, Johnny, General Tiedoll, and Link a new thread to follow as they question the purpose of the long-running holy war. The volume connects Allen’s history—including the disappearance at the Garvey Circus—to a present-day search for answers, with an old bookshop offering a possible clue. Its focus on memory and the origins of the conflict places personal history alongside the series’ larger struggle against akuma.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers following Allen Walker’s story and the wider D.Gray-man conflict.
  • Manga readers interested in mysteries tied to a character’s past.
  • Readers who enjoy supernatural battles framed by questions about a larger war.

Book overview

A cursed teenage boy saves mankind one soul at a time.

Set in a fictional 19th century England, D.Gray-man is the story of Allen Walker, a 15-year-old boy who roams the earth in search of Innocence. Washed away to unknown parts of the world after The Great Flood, Innocence is the mysterious substance used to create weapons that obliterate demons known as akuma.

Kanda, Johnny, General Tiedoll, and Link listen as Allen tells of his past, about the incident at the Garvey Circus where everyone except he and Mana disappeared, then of how he and Mana journeyed together until Mana passed away. This leads the group to puzzle over the mystery of the holy war they've been fighting for so long. What is it really about? It soon comes to light that a clue may be discovered at a certain old bookshop.
