Folklore and the making of Yiddish nationalism

Itzik Nakhmen Gottesman examines how Jewish folklorists in interwar Poland used the collection and study of Yiddish folklore to shape ideas of national identity. The book places this work within the Yiddishist movement, which centered Yiddish language and culture, and considers its relationship to Jewish history and the biblical past. Its account follows three institutions and circles: the Warsaw group led by Noyekh Prilutski, the S. Ansky Vilne Jewish Historic-Ethnographic Society, and the Ethnographic Commission of the Yivo Institute in Vilne. The study also highlights how the urban character of Polish Jewry distinguished this folklore project from European models grounded in peasant culture.
