Small gardens, shared change

David Kass’s picture-book premise turns the overlooked patches of soil around New York City trees into the setting for a story about neighborhood gardening. Inspired by a true story, it follows David as he plants and tends these small spaces, accompanied by his dog Mollie and cat Ollie. As neighbors notice his work and national television takes an interest, the gardens connect individual effort with community participation. The focus on planting, watering, and caring for city greenery gives the story a concrete way to introduce volunteering and local stewardship.

Book overview

David and the City Gardens is inspired by the heartwarming true story of David and his mission to make New York City a little greener and a lot more beautiful.

David transforms neglected "tree squares"--the dirt surrounding city trees that almost everyone thinks is just a patch of useless dirt--into vibrant colorful gardens.

With his loyal companions, Mollie his dog and Ollie his cat, by his side, David's hard work soon catches the attention of neighbors and even the national TV news.

Through planting, watering, and caring for these small gardens, David shows how one person's dedication can brighten a city and inspire others to join in.
