A 1944 manual of close-combat training

Colonel A. J. D. Biddle's manual brings together several forms of individual combat instruction associated with his U.S. Marine Corps training work. Its coverage ranges from bayonet and knife techniques to jiujitsu and savate, then turns to boxing and the principles Biddle calls the “killing shift.” The illustrated edition presents a wartime approach to combat training that also has historical interest: the publisher notes that Biddle’s method with sabre-type weapons differs from those of Fairbairn and Applegate. Together, these subjects make the book a document of military instruction as well as a record of the varied fighting systems Biddle taught.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Readers researching historical military training and close-combat manuals.
  • Those interested in bayonet and knife fighting, jiujitsu, savate, or boxing as subjects of wartime instruction.

Book overview

Biddle was a pioneer of bayonet and hand-to-hand combat training in the US Marine Corps. He taught cadets the use of the machete, sabre, dagger and bayonet. He also taught the techniques of jiujitsu and the French punch-and-kick man-killing attack known as savate. An exceptionally skilled fencer with sabre-type weapons, his 'big knife' techniques are both viable and historically interesting, in that his fencing method differs from the Shanghai method of both Fairbairn and Applegate. Colonel Biddle's rugged schooling in this wartime manual covers both bayonet and knife fighting, then moves to jiujitsu and the deadly savate techniques, concluding with the intricacies of boxing and the principles of the 'killing shift'.
