An FBI agent’s encounters with the Mafia

Set against the FBI’s post-Apalachin efforts to confront organized crime, the account centers on Special Agent Peter C. Clemente and two episodes involving Carlo Gambino. One describes Clemente’s direct encounter with Gambino on a Brooklyn street; another places him in a neighboring suite while Gambino was being wiretapped at a Miami Beach hotel. The description frames these incidents as a personal perspective on the FBI’s battle with the Mafia, linking street-level contact with surveillance work. Its subject is the intersection of federal law enforcement and organized crime in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Book overview

In 1957, following the Mafia's catastrophic Apalachin, NY conclave, FBI Special Agent, Peter C. Clemente was called upon by the New York Top Hoodlum Squad to battle the mob and the likes of crime lord Carlo Gambino, who had never been interviewed before until SA Clemente boldly confronted him on the streets of Brooklyn one day. Later, in 1962, when the same Boss of Bosses was being wiretapped for the first time ever at the Golden Gate Hotel in Miami Beach, who was it that happened to be listening in on him from the next suite, but lawman, SA Clemente-such stories about the FBI and the Mafia have never been told before, until now.
