A history of Malaysian contemporary nasyid

Tracing the genre from 1970 to 2000, this book places Malaysian contemporary nasyid in a wider regional and cultural context. It discusses the shift from traditional arrangements built around simple percussion and vocal harmonies toward contemporary production, and examines the contributions of Raihan, Rabbani, Hijjaz and Brothers. The account also reaches back to influences from Indonesia and Singapore, and covers the controversial period associated with OVA Productions and Darul Arqam (Al Arqam). Together, these subjects frame nasyid’s development as both a musical history and a record of changing cultural influences in Malaysia.
