A personal account of breast cancer misdiagnosis

Robin M. Gray recounts how a breast lump repeatedly assessed as benign was later diagnosed as breast cancer after she sought another biopsy. The account follows the delayed diagnosis and its consequences, including mastectomy and chemotherapy, then turns to Gray’s experience of physical and emotional recovery and malpractice litigation. A substantial postscript offers guidance on reducing or preventing misdiagnosis, drawing on research from breast physicians. Together, the narrative and guide connect one patient’s experience with questions of diagnostic follow-up and patient advocacy. The book also includes advice for people dealing with the aftermath of a misdiagnosis or considering litigation.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • People interested in personal accounts of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
  • Readers seeking patient-advocacy guidance related to diagnostic errors.
  • Those looking for an account that also addresses recovery and malpractice litigation.

Book overview

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Breast Lump What Lies Beneath reveals the true story of a RN in her thirties, Gray, who was seen multiple times by trusted physicians that repeatedly misdiagnosed her breast lump as benign fibrocystic breast condition as her doctors allowed it to grow. While seeking diagnosis Gray unfortunately did not know that the misdiagnosis of breast cancer was common, particularly in younger women. Ultimately, as Gray's breast lump grew painfully larger she questioned her breast surgeon's benign diagnosis and demanded a repeat biopsy that finally led to her seventeen-month delayed breast cancer diagnosis, requiring mastectomy with aggressive chemotherapy. Gray's misdiagnosis story exemplifies that breast cancer can and does happen in young women and sometimes doctors are wrong, so it's important for patients to be their own best advocates. To help women in self-advocacy Gray not only shares her journey through medical mishaps but offers a thorough post-script misdiagnosis reduction/prevention guide, which is supported by research from leading breast physicians. Since some women may have suffered a misdiagnosis, prior to reading this book, Gray also shares her journey after her misdiagnosis through physical/emotional healing and successful malpractice litigation, along with healing and litigation advice for others.
