A specialist volume on the Long Tide

The third installment in a twelve-volume osteopathy series, this book develops concepts introduced in earlier volumes and assumes prior fundamental knowledge of osteopathy. Its subject is the Long Tide, described here as a 100-second cycle, and its relation to therapeutic force within the lesion field. The discussion also examines the dural system as folds in a sac, the relationship between upper and lower dural sacs, and the horizon and Wire as concepts connected to Primary Respiration. The sequential structure and specialized vocabulary place the volume within an ongoing body of work on biodynamics of osteopathy, rather than presenting it as an introductory survey.

Good fit for readers who enjoy

  • Osteopaths or students with foundational osteopathy knowledge
  • Readers following the Biodynamics of Osteopathy series in sequence
  • Those interested in the book’s treatment of the Long Tide and Primary Respiration

Book overview

Biodynamics of Osteopathy: Phase Three is the third in a series of twelve hardback editions. As each volume builds upon the understanding established in the previous ones, it is recommended that the series be read in sequential order. Please note that a prior fundamental knowledge of osteopathy is assumed.

Phase Three is centered around the activities of the Long Tide (100 second cycle). We explore an indwelling therapeutic force already present in the lesion field. We learn that the dural system is not made-up of three sickles but rather a series of folds in a sac, arising during growth and development. We see the relationship between the upper and lower dural sacs, awakening us to the independence of two separate tentorium cerebelli. We discover that zone D, the horizon, and the Wire (along which the Long Tide moves during its intended therapeutic course) are all linked as natural laws pertaining to this level of Primary Respiration.

About the Author James Jealous, D.O. (1943-2021), was a renowned osteopathic physician, teacher, and author. His life's work was the founding and development of Biodynamics of Osteopathy, a unique methodology that follows the lineage of Dr. A.T. Still and Dr. W.G. Sutherland. Dr. Jealous was a 1970 graduate of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (now A.T. Still University). He was inspired by the parallels he saw between the embryological research of Dr. Erich Blechschmidt and the osteopathic insights of Dr. William Sutherland to create his own distinct body of work.
