A critical examination of Christian history and practice

Gary Peterson presents the first large-print volume of a work he says grew from two decades of research into violence and abuses carried out under the banner of Christianity. The description distinguishes criticism of organized religion from an attempt to challenge belief in God, and points to differences among Christian denominations alongside what the author sees as a shared history of atrocities. Peterson also argues that violations of Jesus’s teachings have continued, sometimes without Christians recognizing them. The book is framed as an inquiry into the relationship between religious institutions, historical harm, and the teachings they profess.

Book overview

Twenty years ago I began researching this book, the Atrocities Committed in the Name of God. The last thing I want to do is cause anyone to not believe in God. If you are content with your beliefs, more power to you. I am not writing this book to change your beliefs in God, but I am addressing religion. In specific, the Christian religion. The differences between the denominations of the Christian religion are almost enough to make one wonder if they worship the same God. They do have one thing in common, atrocities. Few are aware of these atrocities. They haven't stopped. As the Christians didn't realize what they were doing in the past, even now they are unaware of their violations of the Teachings of Jesus.
