A young survivor weighs grief, memory, and belonging

Set in Las Vegas against the approach of the 2024 presidential election, the novel centers on Nina Sarasota, a Cuban and Mexican immigrant’s daughter recovering after a mass shooting at her high school. Her grief for her friend Rana intersects with memories of their softball success and with Nina’s reported encounters with Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. A developing romance with high school debater Adam adds another strand as the two consider how ideas from the past might inform their response to present-day divisions. The story brings together personal loss, historical memory, race, religion, and questions about who gets to belong in America.

Book overview

A mind-blowing journey of survival that mirrors our nation's alarming present with its haunting past, American Paradise is a story that will shatter your heart and then make you believe the unbelievable is possible.

Meet the resilient and courageous Nina Sarasota, daughter of Cuban and Mexican immigrants. She has escaped unscathed from the mass shooting at La Cima High School in Las Vegas. The aftermath, however, leaves her devastated over the loss of her best friend Rana Abdullah, a devout Muslim.

Before the massacre, Nina and Rana had led the varsity softball team to first place and a chance at the Nevada state championship. After the tragedy, Nina questions her sanity when she experiences frequent encounters with her heroes Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. As they guide her recovery, she yearns to communicate with Rana's spirit.

Nina's life becomes complicated when she begins a romance with Adam Garrett, the city's top high school debater. How her decisions reconcile with the past and present forces of the universe will impact the rest of their lives.

As the presidential election of 2024 looms, Nina and Adam seek a purpose like Malcolm and Martin to take on the challenges America must overcome to make the country a place where everyone belongs, not the false paradise some believe they're fighting for.
