ADHD, dyslexia, oppositional defiant disorder, rage attacks and other behavioural problems and learning disabilities - these have a tendency to hang out together. They are an endless source of frustration for the afflicted child or teen, as well as their family and teachers One needs to chip away at the various stressors while at the same time dealing with the real baddie of the learning disabilities - poor flexibility and frustration tolerance. Life for some families is a war zone of explosive outbursts, defensive retreats and counter-attacks. It's high stress. It's low on fun. One of the stressors is the inability to read well. Reading is pretty fundamental to all school pursuits, and poor reading skills handicap you in all subjects. This inability to progress in even the subjects you like clobbers your self-esteem, and opens you up to ridicule (and worse) from your peers. If you have poor frustration tolerance this will foster inappropriate, often destructive behaviour. This poetry was one small part of the solution to the reading-averse, hyper-frustrated behaviour bomb teen. It gives parents, grandparents and teachers a well-deserved chuckle too. In my experience, teens who are reading-averse choose books by the thickness of their spine, and a book that is thin seems safe and manageable. In prose an unfamiliar word will stop the reading-averse in their tracks, whereas in poetry the rhythm gets them past it, and allows them to figure out the meaning by the context. Furthermore poetry, like the lyrics of a song, is easily remembered, which embeds new vocabulary in one's memory. There is much research to show that illustrations reduce reading comprehension rather than improving it, so with this book the reader must formulate their own images. Lastly, the book is not just a bunch of silly rhymes - there are plenty of serious subjects for discussion, such as death, bullying, bed-wetting, ADHD, to name a few. It champions the inarticulate, un-sporty, easily frustrated, wonderful children who have so much to offer, if given half a chance.

Popular actress and stand-up comedienne Elizabeth Beckwith gives us the parenting guide to end all parenting guides: Raising the Perfect Child through Guilt and Manipulation. A frequent guest on The Late, Late Show and one of seven comics featured in the Time magazine article, "Funny: The Next Generation," Beckwith now puts forth a hilarious new parenting philosophy that would shock Dr. Spock and traumatize T. Life as the carefree, worry-free, stress-free person she was ended and her reign as The World's Worst Mom had begun.

In this new book, Sona regales her fans with stories from the trenches, with hilarious how-tos (like how to escape from a WebMD vortex of symptom searching), comics and illustrations throughout (like one where Sona time travels to show off her minivan to her younger self), and behind-the- scenes stories with comedy legend Conan O'Brien (and how being the world's worst assistant prepared for her being the world's worst mom).

Ever feared you're the worst parent in the world? Do you feel like the parent you are and the parent you thought you would be are two completely different people? Take comfort in these stories that prove absolutely no one has this figured out, and if you don't find a way to laugh through the chaos, well, you may be missing the point entirely.
From the comedian and New York Times bestselling author of Idiot, a new essay collection about finding the funny even when your life is falling apart.

The world knows comedian and content creator Laura Clery for her hilariously unhinged characters, brutally honest storytelling, and ability to find humor in places most of us wouldn't dare look. But now, she's facing a few things even she didn't see coming: Her seemingly rock-solid relationship crumbling into a very public, very painful divorce (yikes!). Becoming a single parent to two children (oof!), one of whom has significant special needs. Worst of all? She even started dating again (ew!). But instead of pretending like her life couldn't be better, Laura's putting it all on the table: mess, madness, and middle fingers included. And this time, she's writing her own happy ending.

A survivor of addiction, abuse, and even a regrettable flirtation with bangs, Laura reveals how we can break down, rebuild, and still find a way to laugh during life's worst moments--whether it's waking up to find your career's work wiped from the internet, your date begging you to take a magic pill for your boobs, or getting your water shut off in the middle of bathtime. Raw, real, and darkly funny, Laura proves that there is always joy to be found even when life serves you its absolute worst: and that what doesn't kill you really will make you hotter. In Dress Your Baby in Sage and Taupe, Hayley DeRoche, the creator known online as @sadbeige, delivers a witty, illustrated satire of the perfectly monochromatic curated lifestyle embraced by modern parents. In a collection ranging from essays and quizzes to advice columns and poems, she takes aim at buzzy parenting trends such as feeding children artisanal baby superfoods or choosing obscure names for their kids like Tawny and Sorrel. This guide walks new parents through every step of the sad beige parenting journey, from decorating the nursery (take care to choose a suitably existential theme such as the Vastness of the Universe), all the way to the milestone that is the first birthday party (be sure to eschew plastic party favors in favor of hand-whittled wooden toys.) Along the way, she gently encourages new parents to realize that they are already the ideal caregiver for their unique little person, with or without the latest limited edition baby carrier or must-have sleep course. With custom illustrations by Julia Emiliani, this heartfelt blend of humor and social commentary is a breath of fresh air for both overwhelmed parents and those striving for Instagram perfection.
